hell froze last night

The end of the world as I know it came about last night! Hell froze over, pigs were flying and someone managed to find “bird’s milk” (old Moroccan saying). “Why? ” I hear someone asking! Pretty simple:
I installed windows on my Macbook! To be more specific, I installed 2 -yes T W O – instances of windows on my Macbook! This is madness I’m telling you!

To be honest, I’ve toyed with the idea for a while just because a- it’s possible and b- it might be worthwhile for those rare rare times when I need to run some software that is not available on the mac. I never got around to it because I was not sure of the impact on my black baby but yesterday, alas, I took the plunge.

The whole thing was sports motivated – of course! There is a certain game I’m hoping to watch tonight and it is show nowhere in the vicinity (the vicinity in this case refers to Bejjing) so the next best things were Sopcast and TVUplayer, both of which have no Mac version.

So I got my hands on VMware Fusion and proceeded with the surgery! (put creepy music here)

Installing Vmware was a brezze actually! The installer did all the work and all I had to do was click the “next” button a few times… So hard and complicated, I’m telling you!

Then, I had to decide between installing Vista or XP, both of which I had a copy of! I decided to make it a night of firsts and proceed with Vista since I had never used it before, much less installed it. The install took all of 10 minutes maybe. After that, I spend 2 hours trying to get the darn thing to recognize my sound card -which it didn’t! I jumped on good old google to see if others had experienced the same problem and sure enough, a whole lotta people did. That was it for my flirt with Vista.

Thinking that the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know, I proceeded to set up a second virtual machine in VMware for XP. The install was noticeably longer, much like a standard XP install and took about 30mn to get done. At which point, the familiar windows chime rang out of my Macbook’s speakers! I had done it! The unthinkable! Windows xp on my mac! what was the world coming down to!
XP recognized all of the components and after quickly setting up an antivirus and downloading sopcast and tvuplayer, I was in business!

This is pretty darn cool and I should have done it earlier (I’m not sure why but I guess it has something to do with me liking options)

Anyways, everything is running great and when using the “unity mode” applications look like they’re running inside the mac proper… this is a scary age!

It’s not worrisome that you’ve finally succumbed to “more kewl software is available on Windows” syndrome, what’s worrisome is that you’re obviously enjoying Microsoft’s products, just when Mac is finally going mainstream. A rebel in you?

Happy non-denominational holidays to both of you!
