public announcement: Missing Teacher

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Every so often, you come across something that needs to be brought to a wider audience and this is one of those cases. I don’t know this person and have absolutely no relation to him or whatsover but it would be nice if his family could now his whereabouts.

(My cousin went missing 3-4 times for months at a time over a 5 year period – we only wanted to know he was still alive and that he didn’t have to come back if he didn’t want to. It’s the not knowing that causes most of the worry.)

Dear colleagues,

Information sought on missing teacher

Richard Ellis, a 32 year old British teacher based at the British Council Damascus, entered China on 6th April 2006 in order to marry his Chinese wife. He was expected to return to his teaching post in Syria but there has been no news of him for some time. It seems he used to work for English First in Shanghai so it is just possible that one of you may have had some contact with him or may have knowledge of him through the ELT Network in China. We have been asked to do what we can to find out whether he is safe and well. If you have any information as to his whereabouts this would be gratefully received.

Swedish Fashion Retailer H&M Plans China Entry – ChinaFranchiser.com

I have been wondering for a while why did i have this tendency to live in countries where my favorite fashion shop has no (or limited) retail presence. That was the case back in the USA when i had to go all the way to New Work to find them. Same thing in Morocco and then China.
NO MORE!!!
It looks like i might have to travel down to Shanghai or HK for this but i will finally have easy access to H&M.. Oh man! just thinking about a closet full of H&M clothes makes me smile…They’re pretty much the only shop to have gotten the formula right: great quality, trendy designs, affordable.
just gotta wait for 2007 now

I was reading an article about the short-term memory of your everyday joe blow and they mentioned a few lines regarding celebrities and their 15mn of fame. This one was specific to athletes that go through injuries. It finished with these lines

Only a bloomin’ daisy,
Once was a blade of grass;
Today a high school hero,
Tomorrow a pain in the ass.

How true!!!

strange interview

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

This is one of the weirdest ones i’ve been to so far!!

Yesterday, i received an email asking me to show up today at 2:00 p.m. for an interview…all good so far, i’ve gotten used to these weird emails that show up eons after the original application but not this way. I figured i had nothing better to do so might as well check it out.. and so i did!

The place was in like…bumfuck Beijing, really.. north side of the fifth ring road.. i was not even aware of the 5th ring before. a bloody 70 RMB by taxi… that is just too much. i could tour Tangshan for half of that amount.

So anyways, i get there and find the lady i’m supposed to talk to. We go to her office and then i hand her a copy of my resume. I then realized this woman did not know who i was or what i was doing there… can you believe that? It’s a scheduled interview and she has no clue!! Apparently, HR said someone was coming and they were qualified and that’s all she needed to know.
We move directly to talking about salary and it’s obvious that i’m too expensive just from looking at my CV… we start talking and trading figures back and forward for like 5 mn. Mind you, at this point, I still have no idea of what the job entails.. i just remembered the add was for a ‘chamberlain’… strange.

Anyways, after about 15mn, we say goodbye and i leave.. that was it. a waste of money if you ask me but then again, one never knows.
